Little Bezi - orphan update from Zambia

19th January 2012

Last October little Bezi was the latest orphan to join the orphanage - found floundering in a swimming pool the one month old calf was plucked to safety and taken to the nursery facility in Lilayi .

"He has settled well into his 'quarantine stable' and seems to be happy with the new keepers (see photo with Oscar during a quick lunchtime nap!) . His dung is stabilizing and his energy is good," reports Rachael Murton , Project Manager.

"Dr Harvey Kamboyi of the Zambian Wildlife Authority ( ZAWA ) has made a follow up visit and was pleased with his condition, although he has been given antibiotics for the persistent weeping wound on his back leg.

"We should receive the results of his blood test soon and then if he is all clear we hope to introduce him to the other young elephants at Lilayi ."

The team in Zambia would like to extend a HUGE thank you to all involved in Bezi's rescue, initial care and transportation to Lusaka. This has been a fantastic team effort by all, the rewards are evident in just looking at this tiny little elephant who has survived against the odds! At an estimated 3 months old Bezi is still very fragile and his condition is still not 100% but we are doing all we can for him now...

"We will keep you posted of his progress and invite you all to visit Bezi and the other babies at Lilayi !" adds Rachael.
