Poachers claim lives of wildlife officers as baby elephant rescued in Zambia

1st November 2011

The team in Zambia are sad to report that another young elephant calf has become orphaned due to the apparent increase in poaching activities in Zambia.

Baby ' Musolole ' is less than 6 months old and was found by Zambia Wildlife Authority ( ZAWA ) officers on 21st October in Sioma Ngwesi , a 16 hour drive from the Zambian capital, Lusaka. On arrival the experienced Elephant Orphanage Project team began to stablise the tiny elephant's condition ensuring that he was rehydrated and received all the nutrients and medical attention required.

Musolole was transferred to the Lilayi Game Ranch in Lusaka where he joined another recently rescued orphan, Kavalamanja . Once recuperated both elephants will be transferred to the facility in Kafue National Park.

Tragically, two of the ZAWA officers who responded to the poaching of Musolole's mother, were killed in action by a team of highly sophisticated poachers. The young elephant was named in honour of the very brave officer who continued to chase and engage the poachers even after his team had become compromised by an ambush.

Reeling from this sad news and the hard work now before them in caring for two new orphans, the team in Zambia send their condolences to the families of the brave officers who were fighting on the front line of conservation.
