Our Projects: Appeal 2013 Fight for our Wildlife

Location: Africa and Asia
Project Summary: Wildlife crime is devastating species survival but together we can fight it. Please help us continue to support our projects and the wildlife that we love.
With new CEO Sally Case at the helm and with our dedicated staff and volunteers the Foundation is well positioned for a fresh offensive on the war against wildlife crime. If we are to win this war, to keep the projects we support operational and the animals we love alive, then we need your help. So, please can you consider making a donation for the sake of the tiger, the rhino and the elephant, for all our wildlife.
David Shepherd, CBE

Dear Supporter

Ever since I can remember I have been passionate about wildlife, from the birds in my garden to the majestic tiger and, of course, my beloved elephants. So it is with great sadness that I write that 2012 was the worst year on record for the illegal poaching of rhino for their horn and elephants for their ivory ... all fuelling the criminal and devastating global trade in wildlife.

In South Africa, fifty percent more rhino lost their lives to poachers in 2012 than in 2011 and the well documented cases of the mass slaughter of entire elephant families throughout Africa have left me deeply saddened but no less determined to fight for them.

In March, CITES, the UN committee charged with controlling the international trade in endangered species, meets in Bangkok, bringing these and other critical wildlife trade issues to the table.  Here, DSWF and other charities petition government representatives to act to control the trade. For two weeks the eyes of the world watch and stories about wildlife fill our media.  But the issues that affect the survival of our wildlife exist every single day of the year and every day my Foundation continues to fund the work of some of the bravest people in the field who fight on our behalf to save endangered wildlife.

Thanks to your support during the last year we have been able to give more than £450,000 to conservation projects in Africa and Asia that have helped to successfully protect wildlife in the areas in which we work.
