Our Projects: Tiger Facts

Four tigers are killed each week
Project Summary: Tiger Facts from DSWF

There are an estimated 1,400 tigers left in India, 3,200 in the whole world

At the turn on the 20th century there were 40,000 tigers in India

There were 21 reported tiger deaths in India in 2010; 10 from natural causes, 11 from poaching

In the last century, the world has lost three of the eight tiger subspecies; the Bali, Caspian and Javan tigers have all become extinct. The South China tiger is facing the same fate

£3 ,400 is the price paid by traders to poachers for a complete dead tiger

£34 ,000 is the price paid for a complete tiger at market

£24 ,000 is the price paid for a tiger skin at market

The tiger is the largest cat in the world, with a body length of up to 280cm

It is found in the forests, grasslands and mangrove swamps of Asia

Tigers are usually solitary hunters preying mainly on large mammals, such as pigs, deer and antelope

Their distinctive colouring and stripes are unique to each tiger

They have been feared and revered for centuries and are killed for traditional Chinese medicine, trinkets and good luck charms
