Installing a camera trap
in Kaziranga |
As the monsoon waters rise in Kaziranga
tigers are seeking easier prey. Rather than chasing deer through
the watery grasslands reports are reaching DSWF of tigers breaking
through the doors and windows of cattle houses to kill cattle.
This type of tiger activity generates a number of problems for
those trying to protect the endangered cats not least because
farmers demand compensation and revenge tiger killings often follow.
The DSWF team and the Aaranyak society,
working together in Kaziranga, are now concentrating their efforts
on tiger monitoring using camera traps to build up a database
of tiger activity. By mapping the movements of the animals the
team will be able to help advise farmers of the best way of protecting
their herds. Tigers are habitual creatures and often walk the
same route; not putting cattle on these routes may help reduce
the number of cattle killings.
The camera traps also give us that magical
information that there still tigers in Kaziranga, which has to
be good news!
