Lusaka Agreement
Task Force (LATF) reports on illegal ivory impounded in the Phillipines.
The DSWF-supported LATF, also known as the
African Interpol for Wildlife, has reported on a large consignment
of illegal ivory, recently recovered by authorities in the city
of Manila. The 300 kgs of ivory allegedly came from Uganda, a
signatory of the CITES agreement, banning all trade in endangered
wildlife body parts. This total is in addition to the 3 tonnes
of illegal ivory confiscated in China three months ago which also
allegedly originated from Uganda.
Ugandan authorities have pointed out that
the ivory could have come from elephants killed by poachers in
the war torn countries of Sudan and the Democratic Republic of
Congo who then use Uganda as a smuggling route. LATF presented
their report at a meeting in November of the United Nations Environment
Programme for the customs and environmental reporters in Eastern
Africa.
