The
problems faced by Uganda's elephants are the same across Africa
and Asia. They face ever more life threatening challenges as the
competition for subsistence land intensifies with neighbouring
human populations. In a one on one confrontation the elephant
usually wins - unless the human owns a firearm, or has access
to poison or snares, which is increasingly the case. The UCF project
researches movements of villagers and elephants in the Ishasha
River region, which marks the border with the Democratic Republic
of Congo (DRC) from where elephants are now retreating due to
the current crisis in the country. Owing to increased poaching
the elephants are becoming more nervous and aggressive and conflict
with a growing human population is increasing. The project assists
the authorities with anti-poaching and with communities to avoid
conflict.
With the loyal and continued commitment
of DSWF, UCF is able to provide invaluable information towards
understanding the problems involved and to help Uganda Wildlife
Authority plan and act on solutions. It is imperative that this
liaison continues and that information is swiftly acted on, if
elephants are to be able to continue living alongside their human
neighbours in this troubled zone.
Reasons for DSWF support:
To prevent conflict situations and ensure
that elephants and people can live peacefully alongside each other
in this politically sensitive and high density region.
DSWF funds:
DSWF
funding covers equipment for anti-poaching including radios, vehicle
maintenance, bicycles, boats, mosquito nets and tents. It pays
for road building to aid more effective patrolling and tourism,
snare removal and community workshops and compensation to local
farmers for crop raiding incidents. It is also working in conjunction
with UCF on 2 major projects: the Bukorwe elephant trench, and
the Queen Elizabeth Waterways project.
